About Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt

Here at Lake Deborah our goal is to bring you the purest quality salt that nature can provide, while respecting the environment it comes from.

Pure – simple, made by Nature

While all salt originates from the sea, that is where any similarity between sea salt and our lake salt ends.  Millions of years ago, winds blowing across the Indian Ocean carried water droplets and salt minerals inland, where they accumulated in a vast ancient lake in the remote regions of Western Australia.  Today, salts from that ancient lake are buried in vast underground aquifers hidden from today’s polluting environment.

That lake – Lake Deborah – is the source of a unique, naturally occurring white crystal salt that is harvested responsibly to become Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt; salt that has a distinctive, mild and subtle flavour and is free from the pollutants often present in today’s sea salt and some mined salts.

Safely tucked away in a remote, ecologically pristine environment 100's of kilometres away from developed areas, we wait for nature to make our salt.  Each year the rains flood the lake bed bringing ancient salts to the surface.  The summer sun evaporates the brine, new salt crystals form.  When the season’s crop of salt crystals dry, we simply harvest the top 1-2cm from the surface of a small portion of the lake.  Each year the cycle repeats and we wait and let nature do the work, with virtually no impact on the surrounding environment.

You won’t find a more naturally produced salt.

A natural flavour enhancer

Did you know, the flavour of the salt you use will influence the taste of the food you eat and the dishes you create?  While some salts tend to be bitter and leave a lingering aftertaste, Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt, naturally has a unique mineral composition producing a milder, more distinctive flavour with a sweet finish on the palate.

It’s a flavour that will complement rather than overwhelm your food, making it the perfect choice for curing, preserving, baking and all types of dishes, both savoury and sweet.

Once tried, you’ll find it’s the only salt you’ll want to use.

Healthier for you…

Our salt is rich in natural minerals that are essential for human health, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium but free of impurities and man-made pollutants.

Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt has a unique crystal size and shape and customers indicate that it tastes saltier and so use less salt to enhance the taste profilecompared to other salt products.

Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt is regularly tested for impurities – independent tests that consistently show it to be free of microplastics, harmful chemicals and heavy metals – unlike many sea salts and mined salts which can be harmful to our health.  In fact, these tests go beyond the Organic Certification requirements, which Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt has met since 2003. Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt also adheres to international food safety (HACCP) and quality assurance (ISO9001) standards to ensure that you’re provided with pure natural salt.

Healthier for the environment….

Most commonly available salt is produced using energy intensive processes to boil seawater to produce flake salt or industrial plant with added chemicals to purify and evaporate brines pumped from deep underground.  Alternatives, such as rock salt or sea salt also have a considerable environmental impact as they either require digging underground mines or extensive human intervention through the construction of vast evaporation ponds.

Lake Deborah Pure Lake Salt is simply harvested from a natural, self-replenishing lake, dried, graded and packed, which means our collection methods, packing, transport and shipping to the UK result in approximately one sixth of the greenhouse gas emissions produced by most other salt production methods.

In keeping with our commitment to the environment we do not extract brines and source energy from purpose built solar farms to reduce our CO2 emissions by 20% at Lake Deborah and 40% at our warehouse.  We are continually challenging ourselves for further improvements.
